biochemical and physical characterization of petroleum hydrocarbon contaminated soils in tehran
نویسندگان
چکیده
contamination of soil was investigated in this study from the tehran oil refining co. of iran. fifteen soil samples were collected at several points in the azimabad, 15 km south of tehran city, iran. samples were collected at depths of 0–30 cm. control sampleswere prepared to determinebackgroundlevels ofsoil contaminationwithpetroleumhydrocarbonsfor comparison with contaminatedsites. total petroleum hydrocarbon (tph) and poly-aromatic hydrocarbons (pah) concentrations varied from 101334.0–101367.1 and 25321.1–25876.6 mg kg -1 respectively. the results elevated levels of tph and pah contents when compared with the control sample. soil acidity (low ph of 5.3–5.9) and low electrical conductivity provided evidence of reduced metabolic activities on the affected site.microbialgrowthrates for bacteria and fungi expressed as colony forming units were 2.62×10 9 and 4.14×10 6 cfu/g soil, respectively for the contaminated and 5.76×10 9 and 6.83×10 6 cfu/g soil, for the control treatments respectively. these drastic changes can have impact on the nutrient cycle and prevents the absorption of nutrients by plant root sand lead to a reduction in yield.

Persulfate Oxidation for the Remediation of Petroleum Hydrocarbon-Contaminated Soils
The feasibility of total petroleum hydrocarbon-contaminated (TPH) soil remediation was studied using persulfate oxidation. Factors tested included type of activator, persulfate concentration, number of persulfate applications, and reaction time. Probe chemicals were used to study effi ciency of the persulfate oxidation mechanism. The best activation method used Fe2+, which achieved 40.8% TPH de...
متن کاملInvestigation of Hydrocarbon-degrading Microbial Communities of Petroleum Hydrocarbon Contaminated Soils in Harghita County, Romania
Microorganisms able to degrade hydrocarbon pollutants (gasoline, and other petroleum derivatives) have been isolated from two contaminated areas (Sândominic and Bălan) by enrichment technique. The hydrocarbon degradative capacity of contaminated sites were determined using “Biometer flasks” (respiratory CO2 production measurement). Total counts and hydrocarbon degrading counts were determined u...
متن کاملBiodegradation of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons (PAHs) in Petroleum Contaminated Soils
Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons are a class of potentially hazardous chemicals of environmental and health concern. PAHs are one of the most prevalent groups of contaminants found in soil. Biodegradation of complex hydrocarbon usually requires the cooperation of more than single specie. In this research biotreatment of PAH (phenanthrene) was studied in a solid-phase reactor using indigenou...
متن کاملMycobacterium diversity and pyrene mineralization in petroleum-contaminated soils.
Degradative strains of fast-growing Mycobacterium spp. are commonly isolated from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbon (PAH)-contaminated soils. Little is known, however, about the ecology and diversity of indigenous populations of these fast-growing mycobacteria in contaminated environments. In the present study 16S rRNA genes were PCR amplified using Mycobacterium-specific primers and separated by...
متن کاملPhysiological responses of Polypogon monspeliensis L. in petroleum-contaminated soils. Mozhgan Farzami Sepehr * and Farhad Nourozi
In a greenhouse study, decontamination capacity of the species Polypogon monspoliensis was investigatedfor detoxification of petroleum-polluted soils caused by sewage and waste materials of Tehran Petroleum Refinery. For this purpose, the amount of total oil and grease before and 45 days after transplanting one-month-old seedlings in the soils of five different treatments were measured. Polluti...
متن کاملIsolation and Characterization of Hydrocarbon-Degrading Yeast Strains from Petroleum Contaminated Industrial Wastewater
Two yeast strains are enriched and isolated from industrial refinery wastewater. These strains were observed for their ability to utilize several classes of petroleum hydrocarbons substrates, such as n-alkanes and aromatic hydrocarbons as a sole carbon source. Phylogenetic analysis based on the D1/D2 variable domain and the ITS-region sequences indicated that strains HC1 and HC4 were members of...
